Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

The Elkhart County Health Department provides free lead screening tests, oversees and coordinates lead poisoning case management of elevated blood lead levels.

Parents are encouraged to have their children, ages 9 months to 6 years, blood lead tested if any of the following conditions apply:

  1. Does your child live in or visit a house or childcare center built before 1978?
  2. Does anyone in your household work in an industry or have a hobby that uses lead (battery factory, steel smelter, stained glass)?
  3. Does your child have a sibling or playmate that has or did have lead poisoning?

The good news is, lead poisoning can be prevented.  The first step is to have your child tested!  For more information or to schedule an appointment for a free lead test, contact the Elkhart County Health Department at (574) 523-2127.

Lead testing can be scheduled for children ages 9 months-6 years at the Lincoln Center in Elkhart, which is the 4th Wednesday of every month, or at the Goshen Office, which is the 1st Wednesday of every month.  Call (574) 523-2127 to schedule an appointment or for any questions.
